By Donald Margulies
Based on "The Loudest Voice" by Grace Paley
Directed by Elena Gianetti

This area premiere has been described as an “incredible enchantment” by the L.A. Times, Coney Island Christmas introduces us to Shirley Abramowitz, a young Jewish girl who, much to her immigrant parents’ exasperation, is cast as Jesus in the school’s Christmas pageant. As Shirley, now much older, recounts the memorable story to her great-granddaughter, the play captures a timeless and universal tale of what it means to be an American during the holiday season.

Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies weaves together nostalgia, music, and merriment in this new seasonal classic for people of all ages and all faiths.

The Chameleon Theatre Circle is proud to present CHESS a musical written by Richard Nelson, Lyrics by Tim Rice and Music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus at the Gremlin Theatre. Originally produced in 2000 in Chameleon’s Season 2, this is the first of three Greatest Hits from Chameleon's past to be revisited in Season 20! Check and mate!

Cold War conspiracy, musical melodrama and 1980’s power ballads fight for supremacy on the chessboard in the cult sensation by Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar) Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (ABBA). Of Chess, Rolling Stone said the “dazzling score covers nearly all the pop bases,” while Time Magazine raved that the score’s “rock symphonic synthesis was ripe with sophistication and hummable tunes.” It’s the musical you haven’t gotten to see but have always had on your list to see.

Florence (DeYong) finds herself in a romantic triangle between chess masters Freddie (Burton) who’s American, and the Russian, Anatoly (Swanson) staged by a powerful ensemble in the heart of the Cold War.  Politics, espionage and intrigue collide with love and chess, making this all too timely in our current political world. Featuring the Top 40 hit “One Night in Bangkok,” this show arrived on Broadway with great fanfare and acclaim, but is only seldom performed.

Chameleon’s production is co-directed by Brad Donaldson and Jim Vogel, Music Director is Dale Miller, Vocal Directions by Brody Meinke, and Chorographer is Marlo Teal . CHESS features performances by Emma Foster as Svetlana, Sarah DeYong as Florance, Michael Burton as Freddie, and Carl Swanson as Anatoly. Also Frank Blomgren, Jakob Gomez, Shawn A Krueger, Scott Dutton. The Ensemble is power packed with Katie Jenson, Elizabeth Wolfe, Megan Navarrette, Tyus Beeson, Alex Engelsgjerd and Brody Meinke. Scenic design is by William Slayden, Properties design are being crafted by Mark Steffer, Costumes by Kathleen Martin, Lighting Design by Jacob Berg, Stage Management is by Erin Green Vita and Mike Evans, and the Sound Design by Chameleon mainstay Forest Godfrey.

Performances will take place December 1, 2, 4,7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16 at 7:30 pm, and December 3, 10, 17 at 2 pm. Monday, December 4 at 7:30pm will be Industry Night, featuring Pay-What-You-Can pricing at the door, and a discussion with the cast and crew following the performance.

In Breakin', the term "biting" describes one person taking another's stylistically unique move and incorporating it into their own arsenal of movement as if they created it. In many ways this artful theft, more than winning, is the high stakes in a breakin’ battle. Seconds explores how individuality and innovation are both commodified and censored in consumer culture. Dancers grapple with external and internal governing forces that compel conformity, rendering bodies disposable and replaced. Through a blend of Breaking, martial art and contemporary dance vernaculars, BRKFST company members tease out the multiple metaphors embedded in Seconds, interacting with timing, repetition and circumstance, while striving to discover and empower their covetable identities. Sound design is in collaboration with Twin Cities sound artists Katrah Quey and Breakaway.
