When a wild card new Governor is elected, the regular order on the state Capitol campus is thrown into chaos. While a chorus of activists, legislators, lobbyists, civil servants, tour guides, and a few ghosts attempt to get their way, an idealistic new employee finds herself at the center of an unexpected controversy. Misunderstandings and mistaken identity lead to a crash course in how governance works here in Minnesota.

Based on more than 100 true stories, Our House: The Capital Play Project is a culmination of a three-year process to dig beneath the sensational headlines and partisan controversies to look at the people who dedicate themselves to doing the people's business in the People's house.

Sister Act tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the cops hide her away in the last place anyone would expect – a convent!  It features an all-new original '70s disco score with lush and infectious songs by 8-time Oscar-winner, Alan Menken (Beauty and the BeastThe Little MermaidLittle Shop of HorrorsNewsies).  Set around the Christmas holidays, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she also rediscovers her own in a sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship.

Many of the original cast members are returning to thrill and delight audiences!  Artistic Director Michael Brindisi shares, “There’s no doubt about it; this is a feel-good crowd-pleaser. They took a good movie and made it into an even better Broadway musical with a fresh, funny and fast-paced story and big glitzy musical numbers that will make people want to get up and dance.  With this astoundingly talented cast, we’re totally excited to ‘rock the rafters’ once again with this happy and uplifting show. And honestly, Sister Act is exactly what we need right now!”

A boy. A paper plane. An unforgettable adventure.

In this family-friendly show from critically acclaimed theatre company Animal Engine (Petunia and Chicken, Darlings), a lonely boy needs a friend — so he folds one out of a piece of paper! When his paper plane flies too far, it's up to him to journey across land, air, sea, and even outer space to find it — and grow up along the way.

All performed in breathtaking detail by one actor on stage, Animal Engine Co-Artistic Director Karim Muasher, without a single word. Created in collaboration with visionary director Ryan Underbakke (Children's Theatre Company's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Live Action Set's Seven Shot Symphony, Taous Khazem's Sunrise at Midnight). With original music by whimsical composer John Hilsen.

Directed by Matt McNabb

Superior Donuts takes places in the historic Uptown neighborhood of Chicago, where Arthur Przybyszewski runs a donut shop that has been in his family for sixty years. Franco Wicks, a young African-American man, and Arthur’s only employee, wants to modernize the shop while Arthur is more content to spend the day reminiscing about his Polish immigrant father.

Described as a “…soulful play, full of humor and humanity” by Variety, this provacative comedy-drama by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize–winning author Tracy Letts explores the challenges of embracing the past and the redemptive power of friendship.

Letts' play is also the inspiration for the recent hit CBS comedy starring Judd Hirsch and Katey Sagal.

Intended for mature audiences.

ReClaim: a series of conversations between audiences and creative works, to reframe an American identity.

Staged Reading of “Strange Heart Beating,” by Kristin Idaszaktwo-time Jerome fellow and Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists.

Discussion facilitated through a partnership with the Dispute Resolution Center of MN.

Immediately following the reading, audience members form small groups, led by DRC MN facilitators, to unpack their experiences of the story together.

Light refreshments. Free admission.

The Creative Work:
Synopsis: Teeny and Lena are best friends. They grew up together in a rural Minnesota town, dreaming of leaving for the big cities. But now they’re adults, and Teeny is the town sheriff and Lena is a newly-single mother. When the body of Lena’s daughter is found near the lake outside of town, their friendship is stretched to the breaking point. Part Lake Wobegon detective story, part Shirley Jackson ghost story, STRANGE HEART BEATING is a darkly fantastical look at the rural Midwest, the murky nature of justice, and the prejudices that lie just beneath the surface.

This story contains mature themes and language, and is not appropriate for children under 13.

The ReClaim series supports artists who engage fiercely with the complex and contradictory nature of the human experience. We support audiences who yearn for greater personal engagement between works of art and the daily life of our community. With a focus on artists that reckon with social justice on a human scale, the post-presentation discussions are facilitated by skilled leaders in the creation of art and the seeking of justice.

Free parking available across the street in the Lake Country School lot.

It’s a typical morning in a small American town — until a rhinoceros charges down the street. No one is really alarmed, but Berenger soon discovers everyone around him is turning into a rhinoceros – his friends, his co-workers, the townspeople. He’s desperate to save them but no one will listen, until he’s left alone to question what it is to remain human in the face of the trampling herd. Provocative, funny, and frightening, Ionesco’s most renowned work has become a classic parable of social conformity – and human nature.

Guys on Ice

Book and lyrics by Fred Alley, Music by James Kaplan

This charming play tells the story of two ice fishing buddies from Northern Wisconsin who talk and sing about life, love, and the one that got away.

From their ice fishing shanty, long-time pals Lloyd and Marvin keep warm with a mutual appreciation for good bait, cold beer, and the Green Bay Packers. As Marvin anxiously awaits his opportunity to appear on a cable TV fishing show and share secrets of his life on da lake, Lloyds ponders a recent squabble with his wife concerning plans to spend their anniversary at Lambeau Field. Both pals scramble to protect their cold ones from fellow angler Ernie the Moocher.

With musical numbers like “De Wishing Hole,” “Ode to a Snowmobile Suit,” and “Fish is de Miracle Food,” Guys on Ice will charm your wool socks off. The Green Bay Press-Gazette said, “It’s Wisconsiny. It’s also surprisingly touching.”

Gremlin Theatre Presents: A STEADY RAIN

by KEITH HUFF directed by ELLEN FENSTER

featuring DUSTIN BRONSON & PETER CHRISTIAN HANSEN

A STEADY RAIN is a harrowing journey into a moral gray area where trust and loyalty struggle for survival. A dark diologue filled with sharp storytelling and biting repartee, A STEADY RAIN explores the complexities of a lifelong bond tainted by domestic affairs, violence, and the rough streets of Chicago. Joey and Denny have been best friends since kindergarten, and after working together for several years as policemen in Chicago, they are practically family: Joey helps out with Denny's wife and kids; Denny keeps Joey away from the bottle. But when a domestic disturbance call takes a turn for the worse, their friendship is put on the line.

“Keith Huff's A STEADY RAIN offers one of the most powerful theatrical experiences in many seasons.” —Backstage

“A tale of friendship, loyalty and betrayal that keeps you guessing about where guilt truly lies to the final line.” —The Guardian
