After a successful run of The Trump Card last season, acclaimed monologist Mike Daisey is back to present his latest work, A People’s History. This new piece begins simply: Daisey finds a copy of the U.S. history textbook from his high school in rural Maine from over twenty five years ago. What follows is a kind of history lesson as only Daisey could teach, contrasting the history he grew up with and a very different book: Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States. In this 18-part performance Daisey tells a history of America—from the first landing of Columbus to the election of Donald Trump—exposing and illuminating with his signature dark humor as he eviscerates the myths we have all helped make. Daisey has been hailed as “the master storyteller” and “one of the finest solo performers of his generation” by The New York Times. He has been compared to a modern-day Mark Twain and a latter-day Orson Welles for his provocative monologues that combine the political and the personal, weaving together secret histories with hilarity and heart.

This Tony Award-winning musical is set in a 1930’s European perfumery, we meet two shop clerks, Amalia and Georg, who, more often than not, don’t see eye-to-eye. What they don’t know is that they both responded to the same “lonely hearts” advertisement in the newspaper. They each live for the love letters they receive from each other, without knowing that the other is the one writing them.

Considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written, She Loves Me is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old world elegance.

Skylark Opera Theatre presents the Regional Premiere of the new chamber opera, AS ONE. This groundbreaking piece depicts the experience of its transgender protagonist, who endeavors to resolve discord between self and the outside world. Performed in an intimate setting with a string quartet, the opera is sung in two voices, Hannah after (mezzo-soprano) and Hannah before (baritone). Fifteen songs comprise the three-part narrative: With empathy and humor, they trace Hannah’s experiences from her youth in a small town to her college years on the West Coast, and finally to Norway where she is surprised at what she learns about herself.  Commissioned by American Opera Projects and premiered in New York in 2014, As One was conceived and composed by Laura Kaminsky with libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed. Film by Kimberly Reed. This new work — about inclusion, acceptance and understanding — will be directed by Skylark Artistic Director, Bob Neu, and will feature notable opera talents, mezzo-soprano Bergen Baker and bass-baritone Luke Williams. Music Direction by Jeffrey Stirling.
“As One forces you to think, simultaneously challenging preconceptions and inspiring empathy … [with] winning humor and a satisfying emotional arc.”  - The New York Times

This fairy tale classic by Hans Christian Andersen dances onto our main stage this March. The Emperor’s nightingale sings more beautifully than any other creature in the kingdom, but is suddenly replaced by a bejeweled mechanical bird that proves to be more predictable. When the mechanical bird eventually breaks down and the Emperor is taken ill, however, the real nightingale returns to restore the Emperor’s life through its uncompromisingly beautiful song. The story about the power of real beauty to stir the heart is told through original music and dance. It continues our popular collaboration with Escalate Dance that brought you Owl MoonTwelve Dancing Princesses, The Snow Queen and The Velveteen Rabbit.
