Penniless and indebted to two demanding producers, struggling young playwright William Shakespeare is tormented by writer’s block until he meets the beautiful Viola de Lesseps, daughter of a wealthy merchant, whose fiery passion for poetry and drama leaves her secretly longing to be an actor. Both are despondent when they learn that Viola’s father has promised her to the stuffy Lord Wessex in order to gain a title for their family. Under the veil of secrecy, Will and Viola’s passionate love affair becomes the basis of the very play he is writing – Romeo and Juliet. With opening night – and the wedding day – fast approaching, the plots race toward a parallel conclusion. Will it all work out in the end or are the two star-crossed lovers destined for tragedy?

“Two houses, both alike in dignity”—except these guys are about as undignified as they come. See, there were two sets of twins separated years ago. And now, one Antipholus searches the world over for his missing twin (and missing parents), while his servant Dromio tags along looking for his long lost brother too. And these long lost brothers are somehow in love with a set of sisters. Did I mention that both sets of brothers are identical twins? Yeah, it’s that kind of play. One of Shakespeare’s earliest (and most fun) comedies gets a Circus-world twist.

For the first time in its history, the Guthrie will host Austin, TX-based theater collective Rude Mechs (aka Rude Mechanicals) in a development residency to present their latest original work Not Every Mountain, a beguiling meditation on change and permanence. Set against the backdrop of a soft-spoken rumination on life, relationships and ephemerality, performers use simple elements like string, cardboard and magnets to make giant mountains slowly rise, shift and grow. With some help from the audience, the mountains come alive, the seasons change and the moon makes its way across the sky. Since 1995, Rude Mechs has created and produced a genre-defying slate of original works in Texas and toured nationally and abroad. Not Every Mountain is the first episode in Perverse Results, the ensemble’s long-form experiment in episodic collaboration.

Not Every Mountain was created in collaboration with the full ensemble. The style, structure, pace and performance were collectively arranged.

Frank Loesser’s brassy and immortal musical comedy about rolling the dice and falling in love under the bright lights of Broadway involves the unlikeliest of Manhattan pairings: a high-rolling gambler and a puritanical missionary, and a showgirl dreaming of the straight-and-narrow and a crap game manager who is anything but.

Guys & Dolls takes us from the bustle of Times Square to the dance clubs of Havana to the sewers of New York City as it demonstrate the great lengths to which a guy will go when he truly falls in love with a “doll.”

Ah, love. Young and gooey, explosive and fiery, brotherly, unrequited, enduring. A Midsummer Night’s Dream revels in the myriad ways we find to love one another and the lengths we go in order to build and protect our most precious relationships.

Often called “an almost perfect play,” Shakespeare’s comedy tumbles out of the city into a fantastical wilderness of moonlight and magic as lovers and would-be poets  – seeking  freedom, romance and inspiration – stumble upon the forest realm of the fairy king and queen. What follows is a fast-paced, hilarious and heartfelt adventure where ridiculous antics lead to magical moments in unexpected ways.

Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at door.

About the musical guest:

Nick Hensley’s Love Songs For Angry Men: The Acoustic Solo, Duo, Trio, and 4-8 Piece Full Band with the Terrible Name

Nick Hensley is the former lead singer and co-creator of The District, a regional soul & rock act from the upper Midwest based out of St. Paul, MN and Chicago, IL. Hensley created Love Songs for Angry Men shortly after The District called it quits in 2002. Hensley's alias, stage name and alter ego, Love Songs for Angry Men, originated as a bad joke, similar to other short-lived band names like Amish Puppy Mill and Billy's Little Secret. Unfortunately for Nick and his band members, more than 15 years later THE NAME JUST WON’T GO AWAY!

Hensley’s two studio albums were released in 2009 and 2013 to sold out crowds in St. Paul and Minneapolis. The albums are currently available at all major retailers, live shows, and online. They have received several rave reviews from different media outlets including a 4-star review from Paste Magazine,, and a City Pages Best of 2010. Their next album, tentatively titled Adventures and Anxiety, is due to be released in December 2018.

Nick Hensley’s Love Songs for Angry Men has maintained a full schedule since 2002, playing more than 200 shows a year throughout the US and overseas in Ireland, England, and Germany. He has shared the stage with several national acts including The Why Store, Alex Ligertwood of Santana, Fastball, Big Head Todd and The Monsters, The Gear Daddies, The Samples, The Pines, Low, Semisonic, Trampled By Turtles, The Wallflowers, Soul Asylum, Colin Hay, Ryan Adams and many more.

Hensley is also a booking agent and an avid supporter of local music. He has created some of Minnesota’s most popular songwriter showcases including MNaked and the The MN Songwriter Showcase, held every Sunday at Plums in St. Paul and every Wednesday at The Aster Cafe in Northeast Minneapolis.
