The Laramie Project

On October 6th of 1998 Matthew Shepard was beaten and left to die tied to a fence in the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. He died 6 days later. His torture and murder became a watershed historical moment in America that highlighted many of the fault lines in our culture..

A month after the murder the members of Tectonic Theater Project traveled to Laramie and conducted interviews with the people of the town. From these interviews they wrote the play The Laramie Project. The piece has been seen by more than 30 million people around the country.

The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later

In 2008, the members of Tectonic Theater Project returned to Laramie, Wyoming to explore how the town had changed since the murder of Matthew Shepard. What they found defied their expectations. The result was a new play about how we construct our own history. This is the continuing story of an American town.

At the stroke of midnight in the heart of 1900s New Orleans, Union Sons Hall would transform into the Funky Butt — a dance joint named for the throng of sweaty, soulful bodies moving to a provocative new groove called “hot music.” Known today as Jazz, this sound revolution began with a black cornet player named Buddy Bolden who birthed an intoxicating brew of Afro/Caribbean, Latin, Native and European rhythms that became the essence of the Big Easy and set the Jazz Age in motion. Featuring an ensemble of more than 50 actors with and without disabilities, Hot Funky Butt Jazz tells the story of the creative and resilient personalities who stepped out of the shadows to defy racism and create an improvisational sound so unique, it changed music and culture forever.

From the basement to the barn, your beloved Church Basement Ladies are back and getting busy with life outside the kitchen. After the last of the hotdish is served, the coffee pot is emptied, and the Jello molds are put away, these steadfast, sturdy women head to their farms, peel off their good girdles, and get on with their daily chores. In between picking eggs, milking cows, and dusting knickknacks, they congregate with some of the other lovable folks who inhabit this rural community: Earl, who delivers the mail up and down Rural Route One; Fergus, the hired man; and Tillie, who chronicles the action for the Fish County Weekly.

With plenty of crazy antics, loads of fresh laughs, and spanking new original songs, YOU SMELL BARN celebrates rural life in the 1950’s. And, at the center of it all, are your favorite Church Basement Ladies. Whether you’ve seen several versions, or are new to the world of the basement, the 7th in the Church Basement Ladies series is a musical treat for all.

Michael Sommers’ critically acclaimed puppet epic returns to the stage! Inspired by Sommers’ longtime obsession with Goethe’s dramatic poem about a man who sells his soul to the devil, A PRELUDE TO FAUST conjures a miniature surreal world of tormented souls, flying spirits and disembodied hands. With virtuosic puppetry and an original score by Michael Koerner performed with a live orchestra, this landmark production is not to be missed!

"Not only is it the sort of show one regrets ending, it's tempting to come back the next night and see what unlikely moments one missed the first time. Apparently the devil really is in the details." - Quinton Skinner, City Pages (2007)

"It appears to be a puppet show, but it's much more than that. It's a social comedy, a morality tale, with some surrealism in the shape of flying human hearts thrown in for good measure." - Euan Kerr, MPR (2007)

A PRELUDE TO FAUST was commissioned by the Walker Art Center in 1998 and was the first production in Open Eye’s historic theatre in 2007. FAUST was also performed at the Henson International Festival of Puppet Theater in 2000. Open Eye co-founder Michael Sommers wrote the show after researching the Faust story in Germany and the Czech Republic.

Like any myth, meaning shifts over time, as it has in Sommers’ representation of the immortal tale since the last production more than a decade ago. With this latest production of A PRELUDE TO FAUST, Sommers explores more ecstatic violence and a more intensely heartbreaking love story.

Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen were officers in the British army and have been called the best British poets of the “Great War.” The play, based on letters and memoirs, imagines their meeting in a psychiatric hospital–where one was admitted for shell shock, the other for speaking out against the war. As the older Sassoon nurtures Owen in the early stages of his poetic career, they discuss how to write honest poetry about war. As their relationship deepens and they debate whether to return to the trenches, there is one thing they do not face honestly. Eventually, Owen decides he must return to combat. What makes him go back?

Shades of Living

How do you experience the world? Is it easy to wake up in the morning, excited to start your day? Or is it impossible to drag yourself from under the covers? We live on a spectrum, and it varies in our daily life. What does living at a 2 look and feel like? A 10? What breaks us? What restores us? Are we willing to help others come back from theirs? Using movement, poetry, real stories, and crisis as tools for investigating the human condition, Shades of living explores what it means to live the entire breadth of human capacity.

After receiving a letter from beyond the grave, Carla Crale is convinced her mother, who died in prison, was wrongly convicted of her father’s murder. She persuades those who were present at her father’s death 15 years ago to go back to the scene of the crime and recount their version of that day. Their stories are warped by time and their own perceptions but, in the end, reveal the dark and terrible truth. From the pen of Dame Agatha Christie, who adapted this mystery from her own novel Five Little Pigs.

Despite nerves, dropped lines and technical difficulties, they make it through rehearsal and open the show. Theatre Coup d’Etat presents The Tempest by William Shakespeare, directed by James Napoleon Stone, performing October 26 - November 17, 2018, all 7:30pm showings at SpringHouse Ministry Center in Minneapolis.

MINNEAPOLIS – Two-time Ivey Award-winning Theatre Coup d’Etat is proud to present this story of magic, redemption, and the power of self-realization to the Twin Cities. This story is Prospero’s, as we feel her experience the bitterness and rage of betrayal from her brother Antonio, who instead of love choses to take her title, career, and even attempt her life. Escaping by the sheer compassion of her friend Golanzo, Prospero and her daughter Miranda are marooned on an enchanted island, where they find the orphaned creature Caliban and the supernatural Ariel. Refining her magic on the island for 12 years, Prospero allows her rage and pain to consume and drive the development of her powers, bringing her brother and his court crashing unto the shores in a terrible tempest, the mechanism of her revenge. Watch as Prospero comes dangerously close to becoming that which betrayed her, and finding that her greatest power lies not within her magic and manipulation, but in the ability to let go of the past and move forward as a more compassionate version of herself.

The show will feature Prospero played by award-winning local actor Meri Golden, who received the “Classical Performance of the Year” award in Lavender Magazine for her portrayal of the Nurse in Theatre Coup d’Etat’s production of Romeo & Juliet. Meri will be reunited with director James Napoleon Stone, who received an IVEY Award for his co-direction of Hamlet and “Best Director” in City Pages for Equus. Combining actor-driven movement, a blend of live and engineered soundscape, and the black box seating of SpringHouse Ministry Center, Theatre Coup d’Etat’s production of The Tempest is can’t-miss experience.

Admission is sliding scale, $18-$40. Tickets available at www.theatrecoupdetat.com or call 1-800-838-3006. SpringHouse Ministry Center is located at 610 W 28th St.

The Karen L. Charles Threads Dance Project invites you to its 12th season performance, In the Margins. This performance features Charles’ exploration of those who often live “in the margins of society” – an examination of implicit bias as experienced by deaf/hard of hearing communities, and women in America.

Threads will premiere a new work, To Hear like Me, which seeks to bridge the gap between the deaf/hard of hearing community and the hearing community; creating an experience with dance that incorporates American Sign Language, music visualization, and silence within the piece. Threads will also perform Femthology - a compilation of repertory works examining the experience of being female.

The entire show will challenge the audience to be more aware, empathetic, and inclusive of these two marginalized groups who find themselves living In the Margins.

Post show discussion on Friday night, November 16th.
In the Margins will have open captioning and ASL interpretation for both shows.
