Christopher Chen’s highly entertaining dark comedy doesn’t begin onstage — it opens with an art exhibition featuring the work of Chinese artist Lin Bo. After the audience views his art and takes their seats, Bo arrives and shares stories about his life and work as a dissident artist in China. But when a New York reporter and her editor join him onstage, everything shifts and nothing is what it seems, leaving the audience to question what is real, what is illusion and what is a figment of their imagination.

Sea Cabinet (Music by Gwyneth Herbert and Fiona Bevan; Book by Heidi James) is a song cycle of linked songs about memory, obsession, love and the sea.  A woman walks the beach alone, obsessively collecting every discarded and washed-up object she finds.  She takes them home to catalogue each one with the care and rigor of a scientist. Each item sings with the memory of a secret sea-set story.  Written and originally performed in England, this will be the U.S. premiere of the work. This 75-minute song cycle is performed in one-act with no intermission.

First, a story by award-winning Z Puppets’ artists Shari Aronson and Chris Griffith accompanied by Twin Cities’ stellar world music performer, Greg Herriges.  Shari and Chris will use puppetry to bring into being two characters from their own ancestry: a 3500 yr.-old Jewish woman who was with Moses at the crossing of the Red Sea and a 6-yr old Cherokee time traveler bearing witness to the Trail of Tears.

MAKE IT!

Then, Z Puppets’ artists will lead you through simple steps to make power figures — small puppets embodying sources of strength.

The 2019 Works-in-Progress cohort includes choreographers, actors, musicians, playwrights, visual artists, and theater makers who will share collaborative original works that explore themes including pop nostalgia and the early days of the internet, the ephemeral body and queer futurity, isolation and togetherness on a frozen horizon, shapeshifting and Indigenous futurism, and how white supremacy manifests in the body.

+ The Cloud Suit
Collaborators/makers: Julia Gavin Bither and Claire King

Using dance, film, projection, translucent screens, contour tracings, and three dimensional object making, Julia Bither and Claire King trace the image of a future. Here, bodies are not held at their perimeters, expression controls perception, and seeing is a position of wondrous un-knowing.

+ La luz, la sombrisa, y la galaxia
Musicians/Animators: Rebekah Crisanta de Ybarra a.k.a. Lady Xøk and Xilam Balam

A starry-eyed, immersive whitebox experience blends colorscape, sound, puppetry and animation. Lady Xøk brings the story of a warrior Lenca Queen to life through music, invoking bodies and ancestors through mask and light, and floating stories of flying jaguars through space-time.

+ COUNTDOWN
Megan Burns as Wyn
Ricardo Beaird as One
Rosey Lowe as DJ
Meredith Casey as Choreographer

You've got mail! We wish to cordially invite human guests to our interactive Y2K Party. Dress to be stressed and ring in the new millennia with the hottest party games, 90s jams, and foreboding trends. Get ready for the (possible) end of days, but don't think about it too much - it's a party!!!!11! : )

+ Part 1: I'm Uncomfortable With What Im Feeling
by Casey Llewellyn and Morgan Thorson

In an ongoing effort to act against white supremacy, playwright Casey Llewellyn and choreographer/dancer Morgan Thorson move out of the comfort zones of their own disciplines to explore the internal and relational dynamics of their own whiteness as makers and movers. Through sensation-based approaches to choreography, they deepen their awareness of the harmful impacts of whiteness and attempt to enact new ways of being and making.

+ To and From:
Choreographers: Annika Hansen, Nakita Kirchner, Anusha Ramaswami, Nicole Stumpf, and Abigail Whitmore

Five collaborators meet on a single plane to explore their desires for kinship, both proximal and distal. Drawing inspiration from floorplans, cantaloupes in February, laughter, and harsh climates, they ask: How do we understand closeness as a continuum?

This award-winning drama by Wendy Kesselman explores the true story of two sisters who murdered their employer and her daughter in 1930s France. What drove these two young women, who served as maids in the household, to such a desperate act? Class conflict, family dysfunction, loneliness, and love all play a role in this complex and devastating tale. The story of Christine and Léa Papin has spawned more than two dozen books, plays, and movies. What drew Theatre Pro Rata to Kesselmans script is the way it gives the sisters humanity. The production's designers are playing with a very haute couture aesthetic: Were digging in to the nightmare of it, which is very tantalizing, says director Carin Bratlie Wethern.
