THE POSITION

The Temporary Assistant Technical Director is responsible for assisting the Technical Director in the preparation and organization of technical information pertaining to the scenery of any given production, through collaboration with the design team and the other production departments, working from knowledge of standard theatrical technical design.  

Compensation for this temporary position is $1,100 per week, full-time, and exempt.  The duration of this position will be four months, with an option of renewal. Application Deadline:  Friday, July 20th.

Job Highlights

Collaborate with the design team and other production departments to establish methods for the design and execution of the scenery and/or other elements of productions.

  • Consult with designers and production department members via phone, e-mail, fax, with drawings, or in meetings on any issues that arise during the production process which pertain to the build, installation, and strike of the scenery.
  • Attend weekly Production Staff Meetings.
  • Attend Technical Rehearsals and Notes Sessions after rehearsals.

Prepare and organize the technical information pertaining to the scenery for specific productions so that the productions can be built, installed, and struck by the staff in a timely, safe, and cost efficient manner.

  • Engineer technical solutions for all scenic elements based on the designer drawings.
  • Prepare a build, load-in, and strike schedule for assigned production based on the available staff labor and the calendar issued by the Production Director.

Communicate the technical information to shop staff members and other departments so the productions can be built and installed in an accurate, timely, safe, and cost efficient manner.

  • Draft technical drawings for all scenic elements based on the designer drawings so they can be built by the shop staff or by subcontracted labor.
  • Collaborate with Shopper/Buyer to ensure materials are purchased in a timely and cost efficient manner, and correctly allocated to various budgets.
  • Maintain a running dialogue with the designers to ensure that changes to the design are communicated to the appropriate members of the production team.
  • Collaborate with the Scene Shop Supervisor and Show Lead on a daily basis to ensure the build, installation and strike of the scenery for each production is done with maximum efficiency.
  • Collaborate with Shopper/Buyer to ensure materials are purchased in a timely and cost efficient manner, and correctly allocated to various budgets.

Manage the personnel in the scene shop to promote a safe, healthy, and productive working environment for the shop staff.

  • Attend and/or run shop meetings to pass pertinent information along to the shop staff.
  • Maintain a running dialog with the shop staff members to handle any personnel issues that may present themselves during the course of the season.
  • Foster an inclusive environment.

Qualifications

  • Experience in technical theater or commercial scenery production, or a combination of equivalent experience and training.  
  • Knowledge of construction drafting techniques to create drawings used by carpenters for scenic construction.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of construction materials and methods used in the theater to implement in technical designs.
  • Knowledge of basic rigging, hydraulics, pneumatics, and theatrical automation to use in technical designs.
  • Knowledge of simple engineering and structures to use in technical designs.
  • Knowledge of safe working practices to promote and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Skill in creating and manipulating AutoCAD drawings, including 3D, for the purpose of communicating construction information to carpenters and other production departments.
  • Skills in carpentry, welding, rigging, and sewing to draw upon when engineering technical designs.
  • Skill in word processing, spreadsheet usage, and database preparation for information preparation, organization, and communication.
  • Ability to draft construction drawings.
  • Ability to delegate tasks to others in order to keep the flow of work moving forward at an efficient rate.
  • Ability to quickly solve problems that may arise unexpectedly in order to get work done efficiently and safely.
