Music Director Wanted - The Elizabethan Syngers
The Elizabethan Syngers seeks a permanent music director to start June 2018.
The Elizabethan Syngers is a non-profit a capella singing group that was established in 1971 and is comprised of approximately 35 adult male and female auditioned singers (SSATB). The group performs music of the 16th and 17th centuries in period costume, primarily for performance at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. Members also participate in a post-festival holiday season (featuring Renaissance and traditional holiday repertoire) and in occasional off-season community appearances. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings and run from mid-May through mid-August for the Renaissance season, and October through the first few weeks in December for the Holiday Season. Salary is commensurate with experience and skills.
Responsibilities include planning and leading rehearsals, auditioning new members, working with the group’s music selection committee to choose repertoire for the Renaissance and Holiday seasons, creating a repertoire memorization schedule, and singing/performing as part of the group itself.
The Elizabethan Syngers is a volunteer non-profit 501(c)(3) performing group, and its director must strike a successful balance between providing a fun rehearsal/performance environment and pushing the group to excel.
The ideal candidate:
has a Bachelor’s degree in Music, and a minimum of four years of choral conducting experience;
has the ability to prepare the group to perform a capella, in mixed formation, and without a conductor;
is a team builder and diplomat who understands and successfully manages small and large group dynamics;
has an understanding of stylistic and historic aspects of madrigals and music of the Renaissance period;
can convey musical ideas clearly and is familiar with trends and best practices in the areas of musical preparation and performance;
is organized and communicates well both within and outside rehearsals;
has theatrical experience, on-stage and/or directing;
has the ability to arrange vocal parts, as needed;
